Campaign Story

About the project

In the Kotra block of Udaipur, the quality of education for tribal children is severely compromised due to inadequate teaching staff and poor school infrastructure, often resulting in high dropout rates. The retention of teachers in primary schools remains a major challenge because of the area’s remoteness, further contributing to the decline in educational quality.

Making a difference

CRY America’s Project KAS works to facilitate access to quality education by collaborating with School Management Committees (SMCs), government officials, and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), while also improving school infrastructure to encourage student retention. Key activities under this project include identifying and mainstreaming dropout and out-of-school children, including child laborers, into the formal education system, conducting remedial classes to bridge learning gaps, and linking children to relevant educational programs. In addition, the project focuses on forming Children’s Collectives to raise awareness in the community about issues like child labor and child marriage.

The way forward

● Analyze teaching quality and school infrastructure gaps in 8 schools
● Submit 10 request letters quarterly to officials addressing infrastructure development
● Conduct quarterly training workshops for SMC members on governance and accountability
● Establish School Improvement Plans (SIPs) in 13 schools within the intervention area
● Conduct capacity-building workshops for members of 5 Gram Sabhas on financial management, project planning, and implementation
● Ensure the implementation of 5 livelihood programs to provide financial assistance to families and prevent child labor practices
● Provide education scholarships to 200 students to reduce dropout rates
● Conduct vocational training programs for 100 students aged 15–18 years

Amal’s path of choosing education over marriage

Child marriage and child labor continues to be a common practice in the villages of Udaipur district, Rajasthan. Amal*, a 16-year-old boy, worked on farms to support his family’s meagre income while also attending school regularly. Despite hardships, Amal remained passionate about learning and often assisted his teachers with various activities. Inspired by them, he dreamt of becoming a teacher in his community one day.

While Amal was already shouldering two burdens of contributing to his family’s income and staying committed to his education, a third challenge was forced upon him. His family decided to discontinue his education after 10th grade and arranged his marriage, expecting him to take on full household responsibilities. This added pressure deeply threatened to derail the future he was working so hard to build.

Refusing to give up, Amal took a stand. As an active member of the Children’s Collective, he reached out to CRY America’s project team and shared his concerns. The team engaged with his parents, sensitizing them to the health and legal risks of child marriage and explaining how early marriage could crush Amal’s aspirations. They also educated them on the impact of child labor and how discontinuing education would limit his long-term potential.

To ensure the marriage was called off from both sides, the team also visited the girl’s family, and counselled them on the negatives of child marriage, eventually convincing them to cancel the marriage.

With the project team’s support, Amal was re-enrolled in school and began attending Life Skills sessions. To broaden children’s understanding of future opportunities, the team also conducted a career guidance workshop in the community.

Inspired by Amal’s courage and resilience, three of his friends also returned to school, pledging to complete their education before getting married.
